New York, NYIn conjunction with the New York premiere of Elliott Carter’s Piano Quintet on Friday, December 4 at 8pm and Sunday, December 6 at 5pm, CMS proudly presents a free discussion with Elliott Carter and CMS Artist Member Fred Sherry on Saturday, December 5 at 11am.
Elliott Carter describes his Quintet as “one movement of many changing characters and contrasts. The moods and material of the piano are contrasted with those of the string quartet, which, itself, is a combination of four different strands that maintain somewhat independent existences, played by the four strings.†Fred Sherry has a particular affinity for the composer’s work. He began playing his music as a teenager, and describes him as “his musical father.â€
Any new work by this American master represents a major event in the concert season, but these performances take on special resonance as they are presented in the week of his 90th birthday.
The December 5th lecture is FREE and open to the public, but space is limited and reservations are required. For reservations, call 212.875.5788 or e-mail us.

CMS's Recording of Sir William Walton and Edith Sitwell's Façade
by MWATSONPosted October 19, 1998 at 11:06:18 AM
Sir William Walton's setting of the witty and irreverent poetry of Edith Sitwell -- Façade -- is CMS's latest release on the Arabesque label. Façade -- "An Entertainment for Reciter and Chamber Ensemble" is recited by actress Lynn Redgrave.Façade grew out of the collaboration of close friends Walton and Sitwell. Sitwell, a member of London's turn-of-the-century fashionable upper class, was intrigued by the poetic element of rhythm. Walton was a frequent houseguest of the Sitwells in London and, entranced by Sitwell's verses, created eighteen "miniatures" that ran the gamut, musically, from jazz to yodeling.Joining Lynn Redgrave in rendering this parlor piece is Ransom Wilson, flute; CMS Artistic Director David Shifrin, clarinet; Donald Sinta, saxophone; Philip Smith, trumpet; Fred Sherry, cello; Richard Fitz, percussion; and Joseph Silverstein, conductor.
